German cybersecurity brand, Avira, has launched a new, complete antivirus suite for Mac. The antivirus solution, called Avira Security for Mac, comes with both free and paid versions. The latter offering additional security measures.
Avira Security Runs Natively on Mac
In the press release, Avira mentions that its cybersecurity offering “has been redesigned from the ground up and is built using the latest Apple Swift, SwiftUI, Combine frameworks.”
What this essentially means is that many components of Avira Security run natively on Apple’s M1 processors. Stephen Brennar, Avira VP of Product, said:
Combining Avira’s protection engine with Apple’s own technology makes the product a powerful, fast and future-proof security application that runs smoothly on macOS. Most of the application’s components already run natively on the latest Apple Silicon M1 processors, and we are expecting to update the app to run fully native to Apple Silicon in the near future.
Notable Features in Avira Security for Mac
Avira Security for Mac comes with all the bells and whistles one would expect from modern cybersecurity solutions. There is real-time protection, browser security, and on-demand antivirus scanning.
On purchasing the Prime version of Avira Security, users also get additional features such as a VPN, a password manager, a cookie cleaner, and a junk cleaner. Avira has confirmed that there are no advertisements in the free version of Avira Security.
Furthermore, both the free and paid versions of Avira Security come with Smart Scan. This essentially means that users can check for all kinds of security compromises using a single click. The one-click Smart Scan checks for malware, privacy issues, obsolete cookies, and unwanted junk.
The Avira Security for Mac UI will also allow users to switch between light and dark modes, depending on their preference.
How to Get Avira Security for Mac
Macs are not as prone to viruses as Windows computers. Nonetheless, it’s important that users follow internet safety etiquette and occasionally check for signs that point towards a virus infection. The in-built system and browser protection in Avira Security for Mac do this for you. Other features such as the junk cleaner help maintain system performance as well.
Avira Security for Mac’s minimum requirements are macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or later, 2GB of free RAM, 2GB of free storage space, and an active internet connection.
The antivirus suite can be downloaded from Avira’s website. While there is a free version of the antivirus, additional features do require a Prime version that costs $ 99.99/year for five devices.
